How to use GitHub in ChatGPT
-
Open GitHub in ChatGPT’s plugin directory
Open GitHub’s page on chatgpt.com. Sign in to ChatGPT if you are not already.
-
Install it from that page
Choose Install plugin there. It adds the GitHub app to ChatGPT. Since it is listed with Write access, it may ask you to connect the account it works with.
-
Mention GitHub in a chat
Start a new chat and name it in your request, for example: “GitHub, explain this repo's authentication using code and docs: components, request flow, and…”
Availability can depend on your ChatGPT plan, your region and, on work accounts, your admin’s settings.
What GitHub does
Access repositories, issues, and pull requests. Required for some features such as Codex.

What GitHub can access
- Shows its own interface
- GitHub can draw views such as lists, cards, players or forms inside the chat, not only reply in text. Listed as Interactive.
- Makes changes for you
- GitHub can create or change things outside the chat on your behalf, not only read them. Listed as Write.
Before you connect it
OpenAI’s plugin pages note that a connected plugin may receive relevant parts of your chats to answer a request, and that OpenAI’s own terms and privacy policy then cover that data. You can disconnect a plugin later in ChatGPT’s settings. Read the privacy policy (docs.github.com) and terms (docs.github.com).
