What are ChatGPT plugins?
ChatGPT plugins connect ChatGPT to other services and teach it specific jobs. On July 9, 2026 OpenAI renamed its app directory to Plugins. Most people still say ChatGPT apps, and that is fair: every plugin includes at least one app, the part you talk to in a chat.
A plugin can bundle three kinds of thing:
- Apps, which answer in the chat and sometimes show their own interface, like a map, a playlist or a form.
- Skills, packaged instructions for a task. 130 plugins bundle at least one.
- MCP servers, the connection to the service itself. 45 listings name their server’s URL.
Not the 2023 plugins
The ChatGPT plugins of 2023 were a different, experimental system that OpenAI retired in 2024. Many “best ChatGPT plugins” lists still rank tools from that era that you can no longer install. Every plugin here is in the current directory, checked Oct 20, 2026.

What are ChatGPT plugins?
Add-ons that connect ChatGPT to other services and teach it new tasks. Since OpenAI renamed its app directory to Plugins on July 9, 2026, a plugin can bundle apps, skills and MCP servers. 300 are listed in the directory today.
Are ChatGPT apps and ChatGPT plugins the same thing?
Yes, in practice. The listings people call ChatGPT apps now sit in the Plugins directory, and each plugin includes one or more apps. A plugin can also carry skills and an MCP server alongside its app.
How do I add a plugin to ChatGPT?
Open the plugin’s page in the ChatGPT directory while signed in and add it from there. If it works with an account of yours, ChatGPT asks you to sign in to that service and approve access. Then ask for the plugin by name in a chat.
Are these the ChatGPT plugins from 2023?
No. The 2023 ChatGPT plugins were a separate beta that OpenAI retired in 2024. Most “best ChatGPT plugins” articles from that time describe tools that no longer exist. Everything here comes from the current directory.
Is Best GPT Apps affiliated with OpenAI?
